Donald McKay exemplifies an active senior and citizen in the community of Decatur. Whether he is on the dance floor, swimming at the local fitness center or reading the New York Times, Don is completely engaged. Mr. McKay and his late wife Susan, moved into Decatur Christian Towers in 2001. Donald C. McKay Jr. was born in Boston Massachusetts in 1939 and grew up in a high power academic environment suburban Cambridge. His father was a professor of Modern European History at Harvard University and his mother was a lecturer in literature at Radcliffe College. With a wry smile he comments, “As a child, I was shocked to discover that most households did not discuss international affairs and the Cold War at mealtime.” He also recognized his privilege and grateful for his plight, saying, “Indeed many families have more immediate concerns; like survival.” A writer and editor of articles on business, economic, and political matters, Mr. McKay was named one of the “Outstanding Young Men of America” in 1971 for his work as editor of Boston’s Senior News. Later, living in the Atlanta metro Mr. McKay received a “Certificate of Appreciation in Recognition of Outstanding Service” at the Mediation Unit of the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Atlanta District Office. Recently, he served as a Program Assistant at the Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta, a position funded by AmeriCorps VISTA, a domestic version of the Peace Corps. |
